America’s Most Beautiful Woman, 1907

Hear the colorful story of a Denver girl who was chosen in 1907 as the most beautiful woman in America, Wednesday, November 5 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Historian and author Dick Kreck will talk about the life of Marguerite Frey, who was the daughter of a Denver barber, and won a highly publicized state competition sponsored by the Denver Post for a “sweet, unaffected American girl, the finest creature ever created”. Marguerite was one of the featured attractions at the opening of the Roosevelt Tunnel in Cripple Creek in 1907. That same year she competed in the national competition for the most beautiful woman in America and won. Controversy developed when Frederick Bonfils, the owner of the Denver Post, was accused of forcing Marguerite to turn over her contest winnings to him in exchange for a job. She did become a columnist for the newspaper and also traveled throughout the country. Dick Kreck was a columnist for the Denver Post for 38 years and is the author of four Colorado history books.
