Saturday Movie Matinee: Twilight

See the film phenomenon, Twilight, on the library’s big screen, Saturday, April 4, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Bella (Kristen Stewart) doesn’t expect much when she moves to the small town of Forks, until she meets the mysterious and handsome Edward (Robert Pattinson), a boy who’s hiding a dark secret--he’s a vampire. As their worlds and hearts collide, Edward must battle the bloodlust raging inside him as well as vampire enemies who would like to make Bella their prey. The movie is based on the best-selling book by Stephenie Meyer. Free refreshments will be provided. Rated PG-13.

The following free workshops will be presented at the library, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, by staff from Arapahoe Douglas Works:

  • Job Search Toolkit - Friday, April 10, 10:00 a.m.-noon

You can’t build a house without the right tools. Likewise, you need the right tools to land that targeted job. Become an expert in finding the proper job search tools and how to use them. Afterwards, you will be able to build your job search plan and move forward to employment.

  • Resume Concepts, Friday - April 24, 10:00 a.m.-noon

The resume is a powerful marketing piece of your job search. This class, appropriate for the resume beginner as well as experienced resume writers, sheds light on the essential features of successful resumes. Learn how to structure your resume to get an interview.

 

Worlds Connect at Bemis During National Library Week

Bemis is joining libraries around the country in celebrating National Library Week, April 12-18. This year’s theme is Worlds Connect @ Your Library. Stop by the library and try identifying the country of origin for eight folk costumes. You will receive a free book of your choice or a transformer pen just for entering the contest. Winners will have their names entered into a drawing to win one of five gift certificates for dinner at Wild Ginger Thai Restaurant, Damascus Grill, Kai Japanese Cuisine, El Parral Mexican Steak House, or Romano’s Italian Restaurant in Littleton. This program is for all ages.

 

Disappearing Destinations: Places in Peril Around the World

Go on a photographic tour of the most beautiful, yet endangered, travel destinations on earth, Tuesday, April 14 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Author and travel journalist Heather Hansen will talk about places in peril, ranging from the ancient city of Timbuktu in Mali to the boreal forests of Finland. Hansen has biked, backpacked and bushwhacked all over the planet writing about travel, the outdoors and the environment for several national magazines and newspapers, including Outside, Mother Jones and The Los Angeles Times. She is the co-author of the new book, Disappearing Destinations; copies of the book will be available for purchase at the program.

Bemis is joining with the Arapahoe Community College Library to present the following series of programs on financial issues:

  • Investment Strategies for Surviving the Storm

Tuesday, April 21, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Bemis Public Library

Noted financial speaker and author Jim Lunney will talk about strategies to protect your finances through even the harshest economic downturn. Lunney is the author of Surviving the Storm: Investment Strategies That Help You Maximize Profit and Control Risk During the Coming Economic Winter. Many of Lunney’s economic predictions concerning the U.S. economy came to pass during 2008. Lunney is the founder of the Wealth Strategies Group.

  • The Financial Meltdown

Tuesday, April 28, 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Bemis Public Library

The U.S. economy is experiencing one of the most profound structural changes in

history. From the housing debacle to the credit crisis, the impact has been felt in

just about every corner of the world. Staff from Active Minds will explain the origins

of the current situation and proposed remedies of the new Obama administration.

  • College Funding

Tuesday, May 5, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Arapahoe Community College Library

Speakers from private and state colleges will talk about saving for college, student

loans, scholarships and work study programs.

  • Consumer Finances for Tough Times

Tuesday, May 12, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Arapahoe Community College Library

A panel of financial experts will discuss a variety of consumer related issues, including wise use of credit cards, dealing with debt, protecting your savings, etc.

 

Musical Moments @ Sophie’s Place

Relax while listening to music in Sophie’s Place at the library. Monthly performances feature a variety of musical talent from Littleton and the Denver metro area.

  • Wednesday, April 22, 4:00-5:00 p.m.: In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Dry Creek Dixie Dawgs Jazz Band will entertain with a variety of jazz favorites. The ten band members are students from Arapahoe High School.

 

Soldiers with a Secret: Women Who Fought in the Civil War

Hear the true stories of women who fought in the Civil War and how they managed a soldier’s life in disguise on Monday, April 27, 2:00 p.m. Re-enactor Lynne Lawlor will present this program dressed as a Civil War soldier. Lawlor also will talk about the dilemmas faced by modern female Civil War re-enactors, in particular, how they reflect the problems faced by the women of the Civil War era.

 

Free Tax Help!

Bemis is providing free tax return preparation for taxpayers who cannot afford professional assistance. IRS-trained volunteers will be available in the study rooms on the lower level of the library through April 11 on Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from Noon-4:00 p.m. No pre-registration is required to receive assistance.

      The AARP will provide tax preparation help on the upper level of the library through April 14, Mondays and Tuesdays, 9:15 a.m.-1:45 p.m. Pre-registration is required for this assistance, which is provided for low and middle-income seniors aged 60 and over. To register for AARP tax assistance at the library, please call the senior volunteer at the Buck Recreation Center, 303-730-4605.

 

English as a Second Language Classes

Learn English at the library! The spring session of English as a Second Language (ESL) is underway. Beginning English classes take place from 9:00-10:30 a.m., Monday-Thursday and 5:30-6:50 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Intermediate English classes take place from 10:30 a.m.-Noon, Monday-Thursday, and 7:00-8:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. These classes are open to teens age seventeen and over and adults who want to learn English or improve their English. There is a registration fee of $25.00 each semester for adults 21 and older and a $20.00 charge for a textbook the first semester. You may register for the classes at the library’s main floor Information Desk anytime during the year. The ESL classes are held in conjunction with Littleton School District Six and an instructor is provided by the District. Senior Book Club

Meets the first Monday of each month at 2:00 p.m.

The murder of a world-famous physicist raises fears that the Illuminati are operating again after centuries of silence, and religion professor Robert Langdon is called in to assist with the case.

  • May 4:          A Spot of Bother by Hark Haddon

The descent into madness of sixty-one-year-old George Hall goes largely unnoticed due to his family members' preoccupations with their own individual relationship crises.

  • June 1:        The Cowboy & His Elephant by Malcolm MacPherson

In the late 1980s, a female baby elephant’s family is slaughtered, and the baby is transported to America to be sold. Bob Norris is a cowboy with an enormous empathy for animals. The two come together and experience a life-changing bond.

Ninety-something-year-old Jacob Jankowski remembers his time in the circus as a young man during the Great Depression, his friendship with Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, and Rosie, the elephant who gave them hope.

  • June 15:      Delta Wedding by Eudora Welty

A novel of a September wedding in Mississippi in the 1920's, at Shellmound, the plantation of the Fairchild family.

April is National Poetry Month! Join us for an evening devoted to reading, listening to, and writing poetry.   • Teen Movie - The Devil’s Arithmetic

Saturday, April 18, 2:00 p.m.

In recognition of National Holocaust Remembrance Day, we will show the film, The Devil’s Arithmetic, based on the book by Jane Yolen. Kirsten Dunst plays Hannah, a modern teen more concerned with trends than history. During Passover dinner, she zones out as her relatives harp about concentration camps. But then Hannah passes through a portal to the past, where she becomes her own ancestor in Poland during the Nazi persecution of the Jews.

Enjoy a great family after-hours program. Board games and computers will be on hand for fun! Wii games, Rock Band, and Dance Dance Revolution also will be available. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

  • Red Cross Babysitting Classes

Bemis will host an American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Course on Saturday,

May 30, and Tuesday, June 30th. Each class is from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is limited to 12 participants between the ages of 11-15. The course fee is $60. To register, call the American Red Cross directly at 303-722-7474.

 

Children’s Programs

Puppets & Things on Strings

Celebrate National Library Week at Bemis with a unique and memorable family event for all ages. Puppets & Things on Strings will be presented on Saturday, April 18, 11:30 a.m. by ventriloquist, Mark Hellerstein. This theater production includes comedy, puppets, and lots of audience participation. Come with us on an “Adventure in Reading” as we explore the magic and importance of reading. Don’t miss the hilarious high-jinks of a fabulous full-stage marionette production of Jack and the Beanstalk. Space is limited; please plan to arrive early.

 

Celebrate National Library Week @ Bemis

We encourage you to stop in and discover all that Bemis has to offer during National Library Week, April 12-18. This year’s theme is Worlds Connect @ Your Library. Did you know that over 250 story time sessions are offered in the Children’s Room each year? Lots of early literacy practice is gained as children leave the library with armfuls of books each time. Story times also cultivate a strong foundation for lifelong learning, a curiosity about the world and of course, a love of reading.

      In addition to story times, Children’s Room activities include entertainers, movies, crafts, computer classes and even the chance to read to animals through the Paws to Read program. You also can check out books, magazines, music, audio books, DVDs, puppets and more. We look forward to seeing you and helping you find whatever you need. So “Get Connected” and celebrate libraries with us this month.

 

Bemis Bookmark Contest

Summer Reading is just around the corner, which means it is time for our annual Bookmark Contest. Break out your crayons, paint, color pencils and markers to create an awesome picture that might be reproduced on a Children’s bookmark. Kids in grades K-5 are encouraged to create a picture that represents our theme, Be Creative @ Bemis. We will choose one picture from each age category to publish on our bookmarks. Stop by the reference desk in the Children’s Room to pick up your entry form. All entries must be submitted by 9 p.m., April 30.

 

Weekly Story Times & Ongoing Activities

Story Times end May 1 and resume June 2.

  • Story Box:

Ages infant-36 months - Tuesdays & Wednesdays at 9:30 & 10:30 a.m.

A thirty-minute session for children and a caring adult to introduce the joy of rhyme, rhythm and reading. Space is limited; free tickets are available one week in advance.

  • Preschool Story Time:

Ages 3-Kindergarten - Thursdays 10:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m. & Fridays at 10:30 a.m.

Thirty minutes of stories, songs, and activities with a puppet show the first week of the month.

  • Saturday Stories:

Ages 3–Kindergarten - Saturdays, April 11 & 25 at 10:30 a.m.

A family story time geared to ages 3-kindergarten, but all ages are welcome. Children under 3 must attend with an adult.

  • Paws to Read: For readers in grades 1-5

Saturday, April 18, 10 a.m.-noon

Practice reading to a visiting pet pal. Please call 303-795-3961 to register for a twenty-minute spot. Presented by R.E.A.D. Reading Education Assistance Dogs & Denver Pet Partners.

  • An Artist Showcase:

Artwork by students from The Village at Ames Preschool will be on display in the Children’s Room in April.

  • Dial-a-Story - Your child can listen to a story anytime by calling 303-795-3960. Enjoy a new story or an old favorite.
  • Register for Email notification and receive emails of upcoming children’s programs. Visit http://bemis.sirsi.net/. Click on More Information under the top right heading of Library Info and then click on Subscribe Bemis News Email. Or, you may submit a form in person at any information desk the next time you visit the library.

 

We Can Meet Your Computer & Internet Needs

Bemis has 22 Internet access computers on the lower level of the library, plus another six located in the Children’s Room for use by our patrons in 5th grade and younger. Also, wireless Internet access is available in Sophie’s Place for patrons with wireless-enabled laptop computers.

      Our computers use Microsoft operating systems and software that includes Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher. All of our PCs are linked to printers. Printing costs are $0.10 a page for black only or $0.25 a page for color. Our computer lab has 12 PCs and may be scheduled for group use. We are happy to assist patrons individually at any time if you need help using the computers or the Internet.

      We also offer free computer and Internet classes on a regular basis. To find out about upcoming classes or group use of our computer lab, call the library at 303-795-3961 or stop by the Information Desk.

  • Beginning Internet - Learn how to search the Internet by subject or keyword, use browser controls, and evaluate web sites.
  • Beginning Windows - Introduction to the Windows XP operating system.
  • Beginning Word - Learn to write, edit and save documents with this popular word processing program.
  • Computer Comfort - Learn basic computer information necessary to operate a PC.
  • Job Hunting Online - Learn how to search library databases and Internet sources for your job hunt.
  • Mousercise - Improve your mouse skills with fun exercises.

 

Free Medical Services Offered

If you do not have medical insurance and need to see a doctor, take advantage of the free medical services being offered by Adventist Community Services (ACS) and Littleton Adventist Hospital. ACS is providing a van equipped as a medical office and staffed with a medical doctor and a nurse. It will be in the Bemis parking lot on Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Services offered include exams, checkups, screenings, and treatment of chronic conditions. Arrangements for this service were negotiated by the Health Care Committee of the Littleton Immigrant Integration Initiative. For more information, please call ACS at 303-935-7389.

 

Bemis Knitting Group

Knitters of all ages are invited to the library’s knitting group which meets on Friday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. in Sophie’s Place. Bring a pair of needles and a skein of yarn and get ready to knit! Beginners will learn skills such as casting on, knitting, purling, and casting off, while experienced knitters will get project ideas and provide hints and tips for the rest of the group. The group is working on creating gloves, scarves and hats for people who use the free medical van services at the library.
