Once you decide to go into business:

Check local zoning regulations to see in what zone your business can operate (303-795-3754).

Find a location: call the Littleton Business/Industry Affairs Department (303-795-3749) for a listing of available sites.

Contact the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (303-892-3840) for information about state license, permit, and taxes, business registration, finance, also business start-up resource guide, FAQ sheet and the State of Colorado for additional business start-up information.

Understand federal, state, and local tax laws. Contact the IRS (800-829-1040) for federal taxes, the Colorado Department of Revenue (303-238-7378) for state taxes, and the City of Littleton’s Sales Tax Division (303-795-3768 or 303-795-3956) for city taxes.

If you are a Corporation, Limited Partnership, LLC, Sole Proprietorship or General Partnership, file your corporate papers and register your trade name with the Secretary of State (303-894-2200).

If you sell tangible property, get a Colorado Sales Use Tax Application Form from the Colorado Department of Revenue (303-238-7378).

All businesses—whether or not they sell tangible property—need to get a City of Littleton Use Tax Application Form from the Littleton Sales Tax Division (303-795-3768).

Obtain a copy of Littleton’s sign code requirements and a sign permit from City of Littleton’s Code Enforcement Division (303-795-3754).

Obtain a building permit if you intend to do any structural, electrical, or plumbing work from the Littleton Building Department (303-795-3751).

If you intend to sell beer, wine, or liquor, obtain a liquor or beer license from the City Clerk’s Office (303-795-3780).

If you intend to sell food, provide child care, or operate a facility with a pool or body art technician, call Tri-County Health Department to check on health requirements (303-220-9200/303-761-1340) 6162 S. Willow Drive, Suite 100, Greenwood Village CO 80111.

If you will have one or more employees:

Visit Colorado Department of Employment for information about worker’s compensation, licenses, withholding tax accounts and unemployment insurance registration. To apply for a Federal Identification Number (FIN), contact your nearest IRS field office, or call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Hotline at (800-829-4933).

Contact the Division of Labor (303-318-8441) for minimum wage laws.

Obtain anti-discrimination posters from the Civil Rights Commission (303-894-2997).
