Home Occupations

A "home occupation" is any business or service of limited scope, conducted entirely within a dwelling and carried solely by its residents.  Such uses must be clearly incidental and secondary to the primary use of the premises for residential purposes.  The exterior of the property cannot be altered for the purpose of operating a home occupation, nor can the existence of a home occupation affect the residential character of the neighborhood.  Home occupations are permitted in any A-1, R-S, R-L, R-E, R-1, R-2, R-3, R-3X, R-4, M.H., or R-5 Residential Zone Districts; within residential uses in the T or CA District; or any portion of a Planned Development Plan approved for residential use.

NOTE: A "home occupation" is not, for any purpose, a "home based business."

Approval to operate a home occupation can be obtained from the Littleton Zoning Official.  Following are the steps to obtain approval:

  1. Complete the Home Occupations Application form in full and submit it to:

    Pam Hall, Zoning Official
    City of Littleton
    2255 West Berry Avenue
    Littleton, CO 80120
    (303) 795-3748

It is important, for timely processing of the application, to provide your name, the  address of residence where the home occupation is to be conducted; a daytime telephone number and a thorough description of the business you wish to conduct.  If there is not adequate space on the form to provide a complete description of the business, please attach an additional sheet.

Please note that your signature and date is required on the application form.  By signing the form, you are making a commitment to abide by the City Code regulations governing home occupations. A copy of those sections of the City Code relating to home occupations is attached.

  2. If your business involves the sale of goods incidental to the primary nature of the business, you may be required to obtain a separate sales tax license from the City of Littleton Finance Department (795-3768).  For example, the sale of hair care products to the customers of a beauty shop operated in the home is permitted, provided a sales tax license has been obtained from the City.

  3. Occasionally, the type of home occupation proposed requires an inspection of your residence.  In the event an inspection is necessary, it will be scheduled at your convenience during normal city business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday).  The inspection, if required, must be completed prior to approval of the home occupation application.
