Emergency Medical Services Bureau

What's Hot in the EMS

LFR Truck 13.Littleton firefighter.

Littleton Fire Rescue has been providing emergency medical services (E.M.S.) to the City of Littleton, Littleton Fire Protection District and Highlands Ranch Metro Districts for over 30 years. Littleton was the first fire department in the State of Colorado to train fire fighters as paramedics. The paramedics and emergency medical technicians are all dual-role cross-trained firefighter/medical technicians. We take tremendous pride in providing high quality emergency medical care to our citizens.

Littleton Fire Rescue is a full Advanced Life Support (ALS) agency. Every unit in each of our eight fire stations is staffed with a minimum of one paramedic. In addition, each fire engine and Medic ambulance carries ALS drugs,  a cardiac monitor defibrillator and ALS equipment to provide the highest level of emergency medical care when we arrive at the patient’s side. Littleton provides four ALS Transport Medic Units supervised by a paramedic lieutenant and supported by six paramedic engines and two paramedic truck companies.

The E.M.S. Bureau is managed by the E.M.S. Chief. An E.M.S. Training/Quality Assurance Officer provides oversight and support of E.M.S. operations. Medical control is provided by Eugene Eby, emergency room physician from Porter Littleton Adventist Hospital who serves as the agency’s medical director.

Sixty paramedics and 67 emergency medical technicians provide emergency medical care and transport of sick and injured patients. Critical or urgent patients requiring advanced life support are transported by the four Littleton rescues. Patients who are stable and transport is not imminent, requiring basic life support (BLS) measures, are transferred to a private ambulance provider for transport to local hospitals.

Most patients seen by Littleton Fire Rescue request transport to four area hospitals: HealthOne Swedish Medical Center (Level I trauma designation), Porter Littleton Hospital (Level II trauma designation), Health One Skyridge Medical Center(Level III trauma designation) and Denver Porter Hospital (Level III trauma designation), all within a 10 mile radius to the fire district. Littleton Fire Rescue will transport to all hospitals in the Denver Metro area and functions under the most current Denver Metro Medical Protocols.

Littleton Fire Rescue is a Colorado approved and certified training center at both the paramedic and EMT-basic levels. We provide E.M.S. education for both Littleton Fire Rescue and Englewood Fire Department. Continuing Medical Education (CME) is presented to the staff monthly and is provided by a team of high quality in-house Littleton E.M.S. instructors. Most instructors have many years of E.M.S. experience and are certified by the State of Colorado as assistant and/or primary instructors. Littleton E.M.S. presents classes in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (CPR), IV therapy and paramedic and EMT-B State practical exams.

Littleton Fire Rescue is committed to providing the citizens in the communities that we serve with programs that reduce injury, death or disability. We have a long tradition of providing injury prevention programs and public education to our citizens. The EMS Bureau, working cooperatively with our Fire Prevention Bureau and life safety educators, deliver a number of community risk reduction and injury prevention programs to our communities. Programs offered: Bystander CPR, blood pressure monitoring, File of Life, C.A.R. (Common Sense, Awareness, Responsibility) program for teen drivers, care seat safety check, water safety, baby-sitter first aid, bicycle rodeo and helmet give away, stranger awareness, life skills, senior safety awareness, kitchen safety, holiday safety, etc.

Medical coverage for all types of special events is scheduled through the E.M.S. Bureau. Medics on Bikes (MOB) can quickly access sick or injured patients in crowded areas where a traditional medical response would be significantly delayed. The MOB teams are supported by the use of an all-terrain ambulance that is small and maneuverable in crowded areas. It also has the ability to go off-road and retrieve patients from the urban-wild land interface areas. Special event coverage can be scheduled through the E.M.S. Bureau.

Littleton Fire Rescue strives to improve the quality of our medical services. We welcome your feedback, it is very important to us. If you have any questions or comments about our medical services, please contact:
