Museum Expansion Fact Sheet
-
The project will renovate the existing 30-year-old facility at 6028 South Gallup Street. The improved museum will be built on the expanded footprint of the current building.
-
The Littleton Museum
was a private residence, built in the 1950s and purchased by the City for use as a museum. Although the building has been renovated several times, its limited space and lack of an adequate climate control system make it unsuitable for the exhibition of the museum's collection.
-
Andrews & Anderson, the architectural firm that renovated the Littleton Municipal Courthouse, has been selected to design the 32,000-square-foot building with the goal of preserving the building's primary architectural element, the rhyolite stone walls.
-
The new museum will feature a new permanent exhibition space; children's and fine arts galleries, and a changing exhibit gallery; a dedicated education wing for school groups; a lecture hall and classrooms for workshops and public programming; and a research library.
-
Split Rock Studios has been chosen to design, fabricate, and install the permanent exhibits in the museum's expanded galleries.
-
Pinkard Construction has been chosen as the general contractor to construct the new facility. Construction will begin in the fall of 2003 and the museum building will re-open in the early spring of 2005. The cost of the project is estimated at $9 million.
-
The 1860s and 1890s living history farms will remain open throughout the construction to accommodate museum visitors, special events, and educational programming.
