Back to Littleton Press Room Long-time Littleton Police Division Commander Bruce Beckman Announces Retirement
Beckman began his law enforcement career in 1974 when he was hired by the city as a police officer. He was promoted to sergeant in 1978 and to the rank of lieutenant in 1991. He was selected as a commander in 1999. Beckman is an original member of the LPD SWAT Team. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1988. Beckman was responsible for managing the successful application and process for the LPD to achieve international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), becoming only the seventh agency in Colorado to earn this honor. Over his career, Beckman has commanded all three divisions in the department: Investigations, Patrol and Support Services. He coordinated the city's preparedness for the Democratic National Convention and serves as the city's emergency planner. Beckman served his country in the U.S. Army from 1970-1973 and in the Colorado Army National Guard from 1973 to 1999, achieving the rank of colonel and retired as Deputy Commander. He deployed to Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, providing security over more than 24,000 prisoners of war and was awarded a bronze star for his leadership. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College. Beckman has been active in the community as a long-time member of the Littleton Rotary Club, elected as president in 2009. Beckman said, "I am proud of the role I played in the many successes and advancements in the department. Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way." |
