Littleton Intersection Safety Program Expands

Two more intersections begin test period October 24

Littleton’s Intersection Safety Program will expand soon with two additional intersections. West Bowles Avenue at South Platte Canyon Road, and West Mineral Avenue at South Broadway, will join three intersections that received the technology in 2009.

These locations will begin a 30-day warning and test period October 24 and will go live November 24. The test period will give motorists an opportunity to become familiar with the system. The intersections are marked with signs indicating the presence of red light cameras. A motorist whose image is captured running the red light will receive a warning letter in the mail. Each potential violation is reviewed by a Littleton Police officer to verify that a violation occurred. Beginning November 24, those who are confirmed to have run the red light will receive a citation in the mail with a $75 fine. No points are assessed.

The purpose of the program is to stop red light violations and prevent dangerous collisions and injuries. In 2010, these two intersections were among the top accident locations in the city. South Broadway at West Mineral Avenue ranked number four with 26 crashes, and South Platte Canyon Road at West Bowles Avenue was number five with 25 accidents.

The city contracted with American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to administer the program. ATS works with hundreds of communities including Lone Tree, Commerce City, Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village and the E-470 Highway Authority.
