Littleton Housing Authority wins awards from Mountain Plains NAHRO

The Littleton Housing Authority (LHA) received three awards from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Mountain Plains Division at the annual conference held in Park City, Utah. The Mountain Plains Division consists of a six-state region including Colorado, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana.

Kathie Covell-Larson received the award for Special Achievement by an Employee. Kathie's efforts in spearheading the annual Adopt-A-Family program greatly enriched approximately 40 percent of the families in LHA's subsidized programs during the holidays. Families received meals and special gifts for each family member. Adopt-a-Family community sponsors for this season included Arapahoe High School student organizations and staff, Norgren Company employees, Truth Christian Academy students and staff, Lockheed Martin ULA Launch Employees/Operation Santa Claus, Amity Plaza residents, City of Littleton employees and LHA employees.

LHA received the Special Achievement Award, Honorable Mention, for the Planet Hollydays celebration held in December at the Buck Center for families residing in public housing and the John Newey Family Housing developments. Residents were encouraged to come as their favorite Hollywood personality and experienced "red carpet" treatment as they entered. Numerous Hollywood "celebrities" were on hand to greet each resident. The "Planet Holly-Day Café" was well-stocked with food that was provided by local restaurants, including McKinner's Pizza Bar, Blueberry's, Jose's, Wild Ginger, The Old Fashioned Italian Deli, Duffyroll Café, Fazoli's & Einstein Bagels.

Each family left with a "swag bag" and door prizes were awarded from drawings held throughout the evening. Prizes and party donations were provided by Romano's, Merle's Restaurant, Il Vicino, Downtown Dinners, Taco House, CiCi's Pizza, Boston's, The Mellow Mushroom, King Soopers, Hollywood Movie Theaters, the City of Littleton, LHA's Scholarship Fund, Denver Boiler & Van Gilder Insurance.

The Special Achievement Award, Honorable Mention, was awarded to LHA for Energy and Green Building. Over the past two years, LHA has replaced toilets, shower heads and aerators at Amity Plaza, Alyson Court, the Libby Bortz Assisted Living Center and the Powers Circle Apartments resulting in over 6,000,000 gallons of water being saved. In addition, energy efficient boilers were replaced in each of the buildings at the Powers Circle Apartments and at Amity Plaza, which has resulted in approximately a 50% savings in natural gas usage. The administrative offices of LHA, located at 5745 South Bannock, feature energy-efficient heating and air conditioning units and windows, recycled materials for roofing and carpeting, solar tubes for indirect lighting and a moisture-sensitive sprinkling system. Several family public units have been totally re-landscaped with moisture-sensitive sprinkling systems, drought-resistant shrubs and grass and xeriscaping.
