Michael Penny Named New Littleton City Manager
Littleton Mayor Doug Clark announced today the city council’s selection of Michael Penny as Littleton’s new city manager. Penny will begin the position October 3 at an annual salary of $150,000. The city council will formally vote to approve Penny’s appointment on Tuesday, August 30.
Clark said that while the city council was impressed with all of the candidates, Penny’s diverse background, leadership and management skills, as well as his collaborative approach to problem solving, made the city council confident of its choice. “The selection process was very thorough and all five candidates possess extraordinary skills. The council concluded that Michael is the best fit for Littleton,” Clark said.
Penny said he and his wife, Marie, and daughter Anna, are excited to plant roots in Littleton. “We have loved living and working in Frisco the past seven years. But as a family, we were eager to continue our public service in the metro area. When Jim Woods announced his retirement, we decided that Littleton was exactly the kind of community where we wanted to raise our daughter. Littleton is respected in so many areas across Colorado. I can’t wait to get started.”
Penny has been the city manager of Frisco, Colorado since 2004. Previously, he was the city manager of Ouray, Colorado for two years. Penny also held positions with the City of Boulder.
Penny earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, cum laude, from California State University, Long Beach. He received a master’s degree in public administration, cum laude, from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is a graduate of the Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government, Senior Executives in State and Local Government program. Penny was elected by a statewide constituency of local government officials to the Colorado Municipal League Executive Board from 2003 to present and served as president in 2009/2010. He was elected by his peers to the Colorado City/County Management Association Board of Directors from 2004 to present, serving as president in 2010.
Littleton City Manager Jim Woods announced his retirement last spring after 12 years at the helm. It is effective September 30. A reception to honor Woods’ service will be Friday, September 23 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Littleton Center, 2255 West Berry Avenue. Everyone is welcome. |
