Citizens Invited to Redistricting Review and Open House
The Littleton Election Commission will hold a review and discussion of redistricting for city council district boundaries on May 17 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the community room of the Littleton Center, 2255 West Berry Avenue. Additionally, the commission will host a Redistricting - Citizen Review and Comment Open House on Thursday, June 29 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the same location. All citizens are invited.
According to the Littleton City Charter, Article III, Sec. 20, "the four city council districts shall be contiguous, compact, and as nearly rectangular as practicable and have approximately the same population. At least every four years after the establishment of the district, divisions, changes and consolidations shall be made by the election commission to carry out the intent of this article. Such redistricting shall be completed at least three months before the general municipal election at which it is to become effective."
The Election Commission completed minor boundary adjustments in 2007. In 2011, the Election Commission is conducting a four-year review, using the 2010 Census population numbers as a guide. The public can review several options and give feedback for realignment to district boundaries to keep the population in the four districts within five percent of each other. The commission will meet in early July to review the citizen input and vote on any boundary adjustments or hold more meetings as necessary.
