South Platte Park program earns award

Interactive stream table. The Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education honored South Platte Park with the 2010 Award for Excellence in Environmental Education in the pre-k through elementary category for the program “Ecosystem Adventures.”

The program is a field trip offered to schools that focuses on the biotic and non-living parts of the river ecosystem as preserved within South Platte Park. It investigates the innovative idea pioneered by Littleton after the 1965 flood to purchase and preserve the floodplain, and uses the highly interactive stream table to model the river’s dynamics and the city planning challenges it creates.

This program is the first one at South Platte Park to be certified to meet statewide environmental education standards, and this is the first award linked to the Carson Nature Center’s one-of-a-kind stream table. Congratulations to numerous volunteer program leaders and staff that helped develop and lead this program over the past few years.
