Littleton Police K-9 "Hans" sits for a snapshot on the front windowsill of the Police Station on Main Street (now the Town Hall Arts Center). Hans was the only police dog ever officially used by the Police Department. The three year old German Shepherd was donated to the Police Department in 1963 and underwent six weeks of rigorous training at the Denver Police K-9 school. Patrolman John Lawler served as the dog's sole handler. L.P.D. and other agencies used Hans for suspect apprehension, arrest control, and educational demonstrations. The dog was retired in 1966 when Officer Lawler transferred to the Cortez Police Department. During his brief time on the force, Hans wore Littleton Dog License #1.
