Flood Insurance

Do you live in a floodplain? If you answered yes, you are not alone. Over 400 properties within the city of Littleton are located within a floodplain. Any property in a floodplain, or sometimes called a special flood hazard area, may be required by the mortgage holder to have flood insurance. Normal homeowners insurance policies do not typically cover damage to buildings or contents damaged by flooding. However, flood insurance is available to any property within the city through Littleton's participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.

To obtain flood insurance, property owners can simply contact the provider of their homeowners insurance, and request flood insurance. The premium quoted should automatically include a discount due to the fact Littleton participates in the Community Rating System of the National Flood Insurance Program. Discounts range from 5 to 15 percent, based on the severity of flooding potential.

With the spring and summer flooding season approaching, citizens may want to investigate if flood insurance may be a benefit.
