Lecture: “I Am Not a Savage!” Lakota Performers in Europe
- Date: 02/01/2018 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
After the defeat of the Lakota (Sioux) and their placement on reservations, the United States government began efforts to discourage and eventually eliminate the Lakota culture. Performing with wild west shows became a way that the Lakota could preserve and promote their culture against these efforts. They proved that they were not savages and their culture was indeed valid. Steve Friesen's lecture will cover this as well as the impact of the performances upon Europeans and their understanding of the American West. During the lecture he will also show period photographs of the Lakota performing as well full color images of recently discovered artifacts left in Europe by the performers.
Seating is limited, free tickets are available Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the museum, limited to four per person
Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
