In the Country of Women by Susan Straight

Susan Straight, a petite white woman, and Dwayne Sims, a tall black man, started dating in high school, and married after college. Living in Riverside, CA, and raising their three daughters, Susan heard the stories of Dwayne's female ancestors - women who escaped violence in post-slavery Tennessee, murder in Jim Crow Mississippi, abusive men, and poverty. Throughout the years, and through the stories, her definition of family grows, changes, and evolves. Family is a choice we make, not just the blood we inherit.
