The City of Littleton will soon begin a project to remove and replace the Rio Grande Street Bridge at Slaughterhouse Gulch. This bridge is located along Rio Grande Street, north of Berry Avenue and South of Crestline Avenue and has been there since the early 1930s. The project will be partially funded through a CDOT Off-system Bridge Program Grant.

Rio Grande bridge before construction beginsAmerican Civil Constructors, a local Littleton contractor, has been chosen to complete the work. It is estimated that construction will begin in mid-November and last approximately 6 months. During the work, Rio Grande Street will be closed to all traffic at the bridge. Vehicular and pedestrian detour routes will be posted.

A dual cell 10' x 12' box culvert will replace the existing concrete bridge and the existing roadway near the bridge will be widened to match the cross section to the north and south. The city is currently scoping a subsequent project which will place a multi-use trail in one of the cells of the box culvert, providing a multi modal connection from the Community Trail to the Mary Carter Greenway adjacent to the South Platte River.

Prior to the work commencing, variable message boards will be placed along Rio Grande Street, notifying the public of the construction start date.

For questions, contact the city's capital improvement program manager at 303-795-3919; or the city's civil engineer at 303-795-3871.
