Operation Red Wings Monument to be Dedicated near Dietz Memorial
A new monument will be dedicated in Berry Park adjacent to the Danny Dietz Memorial on Monday, November 12 at 11 a.m., to honor those who gave their lives during Operation RED WINGS.
Operation RED WINGS was an attempted counter-insurgent mission in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, involving four members of the United States Navy SEALS, which took place on June 28, 2005. Three of the SEALS were killed during the initial operation, including Littleton native Danny Dietz. Other American Special Operations soldiers (eight SEALS and eight Army Special Operations Night Stalkers) perished when their helicopter was shot down while flying to provide support and rescue to the team. Nineteen brave servicemen died in the line of duty on that tragic day and the new memorial will be dedicated to all who were lost.
The memorial was donated by Matthews International supported by the Dietz family and Veteran’s Funeral Care. Among those speaking at the dedication will be Danny’s mother Cindy Dietz-Marsh, United States Congressman and military veteran Mike Coffman, Littleton Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Valdes, Gary Weber from Matthews International, and a representative from Navy Special Warfare Command.
Berry Park is located at 3400 West Berry Avenue in Littleton.
