Dangerous Structure Demolition Project Will Start Friday

Post Date:05/30/2019

Demolition of a home declared “dangerous” by the city code enforcement division will begin Friday morning with debris removal to take place over the next several weeks. The salvageable contents of the home at 7874 South Windermere Circle were inventoried, removed and are being stored until their disposition is determined.

This home was previously cited for multiple municipal code violations dating back to 2012. The home was determined to be uninhabitable in May of 2018 and an order was issued to bring it to a state of good repair. Despite extensions granted by the city to make corrections to the property, the owner failed to bring the home into compliance and a final notice and order to demolish were issued in November of 2018. The property owner appealed to the Building Board of Appeals (BBOA). After numerous continuances, the BBOA was scheduled to receive additional witness testimony on March 20, 2019 but the home caught fire on March 19. The home was declared to be a dangerous structure due to additional damage caused by the fire. The property owner had 30 days to appeal the declaration but failed to do so. The cause of the fire is still undetermined.

The city will attempt to recover the costs incurred to demolish the structure and remove the debris
