The Friends of the Littleton Library and Museum (FOLM) and the Littleton Museum present Holiday’s Evening on Sunday, December 12, 2021 from 5:30 to 8 pm at the Littleton Museum.

Join us for this evening, outdoors event on the grounds of our living history farms. We have no electric lights outside, so you will be transported back to the winter holidays of the 1800s as you follow the gentle glow of luminarias along the moonlit paths.

Enjoy a wagon ride, snack on cornbread and cookies, and sit at one of the bonfires and look up at the stars as you sip hot cider. Costumed interpreters will bring the past to life by demonstrating or teaching about what your life would be like had you lived in Littleton in the 1800s.

Santa can't visit this year for his safety, so look forward to a video message from him playing inside as your children write letters and make art. We will of course make sure he gets the letters!

Dress warmly - it could be quite chilly!

All activities and refreshments are included in the ticket cost.

Baking during the holidays is a historic tradition, and making gingerbread is a classic favorite! One of the main ingredients is ginger (obviously), but some recipes also call for cinnamon, cloves, mace, allspice, or nutmeg. Ginger was available fresh, but “candied” or crystallized ginger would last longer in storage.

In the late 1800s, spices were often purchased whole, in bulk, and packaged up in paper, then ground and stored at home in containers. A special gift like this toleware box with matching tins would hold precious spices used for holiday baking. Toleware is usually made of tin, painted black or in a dark color, and decorated with gold accents to mimic Japanese lacquerware. The tin canisters were easy to clean, lightweight, and unbreakable.
